When he dies, I think I might use the word "finally." It's not that he's suffering physically. He's rusting out. He said he didn't want to rust out. Nobody close to him thought he would. So when he goes, "finally" seems like what we'll say. But we will miss him, for sure. And I've been kind of worried about that after-death suffering you mention here.
